Is Hvar a town or an island?

It is very common in Croatia that administrative center of the island has the same name as the island.

Hvar is one of those examples.

Town of Hvar is in a small bay on the south coast of the island of Hvar and it had a long and distinguished history as a center for trade and culture in the Adriatic.

Today it is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Croatia.
